More and more families in Subang Jaya, USJ, Puchong and Petaling Jaya are choosing the Cambridge IGCSE for their children. It is taught in English, recognised by universities around the world and flexible enough to suit different learners. But with international schools, learning centres and homeschool programmes all offering IGCSE, how do you choose the right one?
Here is the checklist we suggest to parents who visit us, whichever school you end up choosing.
1. How big are the classes?
Class size shapes almost everything else: how often your child is asked a question, how quickly a teacher notices they are stuck, and whether a quiet student ever gets to speak. Ask for the maximum class size, not the average. At King’s Cross Academy we cap every class at 14 students, so teachers can watch each child closely and give them the attention they need.
2. Which IGCSE subjects are offered?
Most students take English, Mathematics and the sciences, plus a few subjects that match their interests and future plans. Check that the school offers the combination your child needs, and ask how subject choices are made. Our core subjects are English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Travel & Tourism, and additional subjects can be arranged on request. See our IGCSE programmes for details.
3. How are students taught and assessed?
Good IGCSE preparation is more than finishing the syllabus. Ask how often students are assessed, how parents hear about progress, and what happens when a child falls behind. Look for a school that encourages independent learning, where students learn to plan their work, check their own answers and research on their own, because those habits matter in A-Levels and university.
4. What happens outside lessons?
Sports, clubs, trips and presentations build confidence, friendships and skills no exam can measure. Ask to see what students actually did last term. At KCA our students play sports, learn taekwondo, bake and cook, go on study trips and present in front of their class. You can browse the photos on our Activities page.
5. Is it a caring community?
Children learn best when they feel safe and valued. Ask how the school handles friendship problems, stress before exams and students who need extra support. We provide counselling when needed, and our teachers see themselves as mentors, not just instructors.
6. Is it practical for your family?
A shorter journey means more sleep, more family time and less stress. Our campus is at Subang Business Centre in USJ 9, Subang Jaya, within easy reach of families in USJ, Puchong, Bandar Sunway and Petaling Jaya. Ask about school hours, and ask for the current fee schedule so you can compare like with like.
What about homeschooling?
Some families consider IGCSE homeschooling for flexibility. The challenge is usually structure, subject expertise and friendships. A small school like ours offers a middle way: qualified teachers and a real classroom community, with the personal attention of a homeschool setting.
